UK ahead of US
Daniel Castro, Senior Analyst, of Washington, DC-based Information Technology and Innovation Foundation, penned a report in “The Role of Information Technology in Medical Research in October 2009, in which he wrote “the United Kingdom is uniquely positioned to benefit from advancements in health informatics research because it is significantly ahead of the United States in its transition to electronic health records among primary care providers. More importantly, the National Health Service (NHS) has made an important strategic decision to emphasize medical research as one of its core missions.”

Explaining International Health IT Leadership:
Report and Video
ITIF held an event on Sept 22, 2009 in conjunction with release of report “Explaining International Health IT Leadership” by ITIF Senior Analyst Daniel Castro. Webcast and slides include presentations from Castro, and government health leaders from Finland and Denmark. The related report focuses on Sweden, Finland, and Denmark as leaders. With exception of Sweden and Finland, adoption of EHRs by primary care physicians far outweighs adoption by hospitals in countries examined. The report includes lessons to be learned from outside the United States, and makes policy recommendations about health IT adoption.
